Kale as a Superfood

Kale is a leafy vegetable from the cabbage (Brassica oleracea) family, that is related to other vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, and brussels sprouts. It can come in many different colours and varieties, with one of the most common being curly kale, or Scots kale, which is distinguished by green, curly leaves, and a hard, fibrous stem. Kale grows best in cooler climates, especially Mediterranean regions, but is also found in many other areas of the world. Kale leaves can be flat or curly, and grow up to 6 feet in height, with colours including green, purple, white, and lavender. It is an extremely nutrient dense food, full of important vitamins and minerals that the body requires to function on a cellular level. Health Benefits of Wine

Wine is an alcoholic drink many people enjoy dinner or to relax. It is an alcoholic beverage made from grapes which have been fermented without the addition of acids, sugars, enzymes, or other nutrients. In this process, yeast consumes the sugar in the fruit and converts it to ethanol and carbon dioxide. Different strains of yeast and different varieties of grapes produce different styles of wine. There are some varieties of wine that are not made from grapes and these include rice wines, and fruit wines such as plum, cherry, pomegranate, and elderberry. Red wines are made from the dark coloured grape varieties and involve the extraction of colour and flavour components from the grape skins. White wines, on the other hand, are made from the fermentation of non-coloured grape pulps, with the process not allowing any colouration from the skins. Because the skin of the grapes contains most of the antioxidants, red wines generally contain higher amounts of these antioxidant compounds.

There are many screening tests and examinations that healthy men can undertake to help with detection of diseases such as cancer. Your General Practitioner is well placed to carry out some of these tests, refer you to have other tests, or to advise you on some of  the self-checks you can be doing to monitor your health. One of the key roles of your GP is to prevent disease, so they will be only too happy to help you. The recommendations below often refer to screening for the general population – for men with specific risk factors for a particular disease the recommendations may be different. Your GP will be able to advise you if you are in any doubt.

  • Tulsi or Holy Basil (Ocimum sanctum): Holy basil is a powerful antioxidant. It also has strong antibacterial, antifungal, and anti inflammatory properties. This herb is used to treat anxiety and stress due to its ability to decrease the body’s levels of the stress hormone cortisol. It is also an adaptogen, which means it will not alter mood, but rather helps the body function optimally during times of stress. Holy basil is also used to treat: the common cold, flu, asthma, bronchitis, headaches, stomach upsets, fever, heart disease, and tuberculosis. Studies suggest it may also be effective in treating certain types of cancer.

    Licorice Root (Glycyrrhiza Glabra): Licorice root contains many anti-depressant compounds and has many health benefits such as: boosts the immune system by increasing levels of interferon; a chemical in the immune system that fights viruses, relieves pain and stress by preventing the breakdown of adrenal hormones such as cortisol (primary stress-fighting hormone), and combats hay fever due to being an anti-allergenic. It is also used for ulcers, indigestion, heartburn, respiratory problems, chronic fatigue symptoms and fibromyalgia, hepatitis, PMS, and heart disease.
