Its that time of the year around the world where we begin to celebrate the “silly season”.  We over indulge in festive foods and treats.  Among its many health benefits did you know DILL can relieve an upset stomach, bloating, gas and nausea.

  DILL Dill (Anethum graveolens), is a popular culinary herb which has been used medicinally since ancient Egyptian, Greek, and Roman times. It is an annual herb in the celery family Apiaceae, and is the only species in the genus Anethum. This herb often grows up to 40 – 60cm and has slender, hollow stems, and alternate, finely divided, feathery leaves which are similar to those of fennel, except harder in texture. The flowers are commonly white to yellow in colour and the aroma is similar to that of aniseed. Dill originated in the Mediterranean region, specifically southern Russia, and West Africa. The parts of this plant commonly used are the leaves, flowers, and seeds. Kale is a leafy vegetable from the cabbage (Brassica oleracea) family, that is related to other vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, and brussels sprouts. It can come in many different colours and varieties, with one of the most common being curly kale, or Scots kale, which is distinguished by green, curly leaves, and a hard, fibrous stem. Kale grows best in cooler climates, especially Mediterranean regions, but is also found in many other areas of the world. Kale leaves can be flat or curly, and grow up to 6 feet in height, with colours including green, purple, white, and lavender. It is an extremely nutrient dense food, full of important vitamins and minerals that the body requires to function on a cellular level. Diabetes is a chronic condition where an individual’s body cannot maintain healthy levels of glucose in the blood. Unhealthy blood glucose levels can lead to a variety of long term and short term problems. Glucose is a type of sugar, and is the body’s main source of energy. To function properly, our bodies require sugars (glucose) to be converted into energy. The hormone, insulin, is essential for the conversion of glucose to energy, and is therefore responsible for stabilizing the amount of sugar in the blood. People with diabetes tend to have insufficient insulin levels which results in a build-up of glucose in the blood. There are three main types of diabetes:

  • Type 1 diabetes: With this type of diabetes, the body’s immune system attacks and destroys cells in the pancreas that produce insulin. It is an autoimmune condition, and the cause of this reaction is currently unknown. This type is less common than type 2 diabetes (affecting approximately 10% of people), and usually occurs before the age of 40. People with this type of diabetes have to depend on insulin injections

Glycine max, commonly known as soybean or soya bean, is part of the legume family, and native to East Asia. It is grown for its edible bean which has high levels of protein and has a wide variety of uses. Soybeans have only been introduced to the Western world since the 20th century, and are a relatively easy to grow and hardy plant, due to their adaptation to a variety of soils and climates. The most common type of soybean is a yellow colour, but rarer varieties can come in black, brown, or green colours. Some uses for this bean include: animal feed (defatted soybean meal), meat and dairy substitutes, industrial products such as lubricants, plastics, and waxes, and the production of foods such as soy vegetable oil, soy milk, tofu, tofu skin, soy sauce, fermented bean paste, natto, and tempeh. Any given area of land planted with soybeans can produce more protein than land planted with other crops, or especially, meat animals.   FOR: The soybean is:

SAGE

Common sage (Salvia officinalis) is a perennial, evergreen dwarf shrub, which can grow up to 2 feet, and is characterized by woody stems, purple/blue flowers, and grey/green leaves. It is part of the mint family, Lamiaceae and is native to the Mediterranean and the Balkan region (a peninsula and cultural area in South-eastern Europe). The botanical name, Salvia, is derived from the Latin word salvere which means ‘to be saved’. Sage was a sacred ceremonial herb of the Romans, being associated with immortality, and was used by the Greeks as a ‘coronary herb’ because it flushed disease from the body and relieved strain on the heart. In the Middle Ages sage was ingested as a tea to treat colds, fevers, memory and concentration loss, inflammations, ulcers, and many other ailments. There are approximately 8 different types of sage, each differing in appearance and use. These are:

  • Garden sage (Salvia officinalis): This is the most common type of sage, and is used for cooking, tea brewing, decoration, and medicinal use
  • Pineapple sage (Salvia elegans): This variety of sage has tubular red flowers and is used mainly for medicinal purposes
  • Russian sage (Perovskia atriplicifolia): This type has silver/grey leaves, and produces small, blue/purple tubular fl

CHAMOMILE

This herb has been used for centuries to calm the nerves and induce sleep. It is from a daisy-like family of plants called Asteraceae, and while there are many different types of chamomile, the most common are German Chamomile (Marticaria recutita), and Roman Chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile). Chamomile is known to be used by the ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans, and was also popular throughout the middle ages.

Diamond is the hardest mineral in the world, with a hardness of 10 on Moh’s hardness scale. Diamond is composed completely of carbon atoms arranged in a strong crystal lattice. It is so hard because the carbon atoms are bonded together via extremely strong covalent bonds. There are usually hardly any impurities in diamond due to the rigidity of its lattice, but when there is nitrogen or boron present, the diamond will turn yellow or blue respectively.   Diamond is formed at extremely high pressures and temperatures deep under the Earth’s surface. This depth usually varies between 140 – 190 kilometres into the Earth’s mantle. Minerals containing carbon, provide the source material, and the diamond crystal will grow over a time period of 1 billion to 3.3 billion years. It’s so simple and convenient that it couldn’t possibly count as exercise, right?  Wrong.  Study after study shows that regular moderate walking can help you lose weight and reduce your risk of heart disease.   In a study published in “Diabetes Research in Clinical Practice”, Japanese researchers tested obese men before and after they joined a one-year modest walking plan.  All they did was increase the number of steps they took during their daily activities.  The result: their blood pressure and cholesterol levels improved and the amount of body fat around their abdomen – the dangerous kind that leads to higher rates of heart disease and diabetes – significantly decreased.   For walking to count as exercise you need to walk five days a week for 30 minutes. Listening to music or even an “e” book while you walk takes your mind off the actual walk and making it easier to achieve.   Most people walk around 5000 steps per day without participating in any sport or exercise.   Using a pedometer, find your normal baseline of how many steps you take in a normal day.  Then, increase that amount by at least 200 steps a day until you reach 10000 or 12500 daily steps.
