Malachite is an altered form of copper. When the copper is exposed to air and moisture, the metal corrodes, producing a green patina.
In underground ores, when the malachite replaces the copper, it is then known as a secondary ore. Another similar secondary ore of copper is azurite, which is easily discernible from malachite due to it’s bright blue hue.
