Ruby is a precious variety of the mineral corundum. In its blue form, it is known as Sapphire. The red colouring of rubies comes from the presence of an element called chromium.
Rubies and sapphires are very hard (rating at a hardness of 9 on Moh’s hardness scale), only diamonds are harder. This property makes these gems extremely resistant to every day wear and tear. Rubies are also commonly used in lasers due to their ability to concentrate light to a very high intensity.
If a corundum stone does not reach a high enough saturation quality, it will be classified as a pink sapphire.
