Jasper is a variety of chalcedony, which is a microcrystalline variety of quartz. The colouring of the stone is determined by the presence of certain mineral impurities.
Haematite impurities result in red jasper, limonite impurities result in brown or yellow jasper, and chlorite impurities result in green jasper.
