SOY: GOOD OR BAD?

Glycine max, commonly known as soybean or soya bean, is part of the legume family, and native to East Asia. It is grown for its edible bean which has high levels of protein and has a wide variety of uses. Soybeans have only been introduced to the Western world since the 20th century, and are a relatively easy to grow and hardy plant, due to their adaptation to a variety of soils and climates. The most common type of soybean is a yellow colour, but rarer varieties can come in black, brown, or green colours. Some uses for this bean include: animal feed (defatted soybean meal), meat and dairy substitutes, industrial products such as lubricants, plastics, and waxes, and the production of foods such as soy vegetable oil, soy milk, tofu, tofu skin, soy sauce, fermented bean paste, natto, and tempeh. Any given area of land planted with soybeans can produce more protein than land planted with other crops, or especially, meat animals.   FOR: The soybean is:

SEASONAL AFFECTIVE DISORDER (SAD) Seasonal Affective Disorder is a type of depression that is related to seasonal changes. This condition is also known as: winter depression, winter blues, summer depression, or seasonal depression. To be correctly diagnosed, the affected person should be known to have normal mental health throughout the rest of the year, with periods of depression occurring at the same time each year, usually winter. It is caused by the variation of light exposure in different seasons, most commonly, lack of light in winter. The lack of sunlight decreases the chemical serotonin (which regulates mood), and increases the production of the chemical melatonin (increases sleep and drowsiness). Cases of SAD are rare in Australia and are more likely to occur in places further from the equator where the days are shorter.   Symptoms include:

  • Lethargy
  • Oversleeping
  • Poor sleep
  • Difficulty getting up in the morning
  • Insomnia
  • Decreased libido
  • Body aches
  • Overeating

HAY FEVER

Scientifically known as Allergic Rhinitis, hay fever affects about 1 in 5 people in Australia, and roughly 500 million people worldwide. It is defined as an allergy that affects the nose, and occurs when the insides of the nose become inflamed due to the over sensitised immune system reacting to certain substances which the body sees as a threat. This swelling is due to the release of histamines and other chemicals in the body. The majority of hay fever sufferers have found that their condition is worse at night. This is because night time is the worst time for pollen levels, or because the pillow on which they sleep may be full of dust mites (approximately 50 000 dust mites live in the average pillow). Hay fever can trigger asthma attacks as the level of inflammatory chemicals released from hay fever reactions increases, and causes muscle spasms and swelling in wider ranging mucous membranes.
