General
Neurotherapy, EEG biofeedback or Neurofeedback is the reconditioning or retraining of brainwave patterns using high tech electronic equipment and specific software. Qualified medical practitioners can also access, diagnose and retrain brainwave patterns using this technology.
During typical training, a couple of electrodes are placed on the scalp and one or two are usually put on the ear lobe. Then, high-tech electronic equipment provides you with real-time, instantaneous audio and visual feedback about your brainwave activity. The electrodes measure the electrical patterns coming from the brain–much like a physician listens to your heart from the surface of your skin. No electrical current is put into your brain. Your brainwave patterns are relayed to the computer and recorded.
Neurofeedback studies show improvement is the following; ADD/ADHD & Learning disabilities, Epilepsy, Brain Injuries & Stroke, Alcoholism & Drug Abuse, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, Anxiety, Depression, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, sleep disorders, Tourette’s, obsessive-compulsive disorder, autism, Parkinson’s tremors and essential tremors.
Neurofeedback is also being utilized in peak performance training with athletes, business executives, for cognitive enhancement, in normal college students, for memory enhancement in normal individuals and for “brain brightening” to counter effects of normal aging. However, these areas of application do not yet have strong research validation.
My understanding is that it may take at least 10 to 20 sessions for long term effectiveness.
NeurOptimal
NeurOptimal is not a medical treatment, device or methodology. It is not used to diagnose medical disorders, nor is it used as a medical treatment for disorders. It has not been approved for any medical purpose whatsoever by the FDA, Health Canada or any other government agency. While Zengar trainers may or may not be licenced health care practitioners; their use of the NeurOptimal is as a tool for brain training and optimization, not as a means of diagnosis or as a medical intervention.
NeurOptimal is considered by many to be the most highly evolved form of neurofeedback available today. After more than 20 years in the neuroscience field and related disciplines, Dr Valdeane Brown and Dr. Susan Cheshire Brown, Zengar Institute founders, have developed a safe effective system that gives feedback directly to your brain allowing it to regulate itself more efficiently.
During a NeurOptimal brain training session, you wear two tiny sensors on your head and ear clips on your ears that record your brain waves. You sit in a comfortable chair and listen to music while watching a never repeating fractal image or movie. The music and images respond to your brainwaves as unproductive brain patterns create brief interruptions in the music or visual display. These interruptions signal the brain to self-correct into a more natural, relaxed and effective pattern. After a 20-40 minute session you feel refreshed, relaxed and in a higher state of mental alertness and flow.
